PowerMatching City: live smart grid

Powermatching City

The PowerMatching City project in the city of Groningen is a unique field trial where the Smart Grid Concept is being tested in practice. A total of 40 homes have been fitted with solar PV panels, intelligent meters, sustainable heating facilities, smart appliances, electric vehicles and in-home displays. All homes are behind a single substation, which is also controlled as part of the project. A separate wind turbine acts as extra source of sustainable energy. The consumption of energy is matched, in real time, with the available supply. The predictive system is able to deal with peaks in the amount of available solar and wind energy, while respecting the power network capacity limits. The residents of the homes have full insight of their energy consumption and their comfort levels are guaranteed. In addition, they can participate in newly developed smart energy services.
